Design Acer Nitro 7
I find Acer’s Nitro series to be fascinating. They resemble covert gaming computers. Not that it’s really persuasive. People will say things like “Hey, nice gaming laptop” when you pull out a Nitro 7 at the office. Particularly considering the peculiar pentagonal form of the base and lid, you’re not fooling anyone.
Nevertheless, compared to Acer’s Predator line, the Nitro 7 is a little more understated (and sophisticated). The chassis is all black; it lacks the eye-catching red vent covers and accents found on the Predator range. One standout feature is the brushed metal lid, which is etched with the Acer logotype alone. There is no mention of “Predator” or “Nitro,” and the Predator laptops’ peculiar logo that resembles Transformers is also absent.
Acer looks fantastic in this outfit. For me, the Nitro 7 is still a little too forceful, and I think the unconventional design of the lid is especially dubious. There’s not much else to scoff at, though. Its thickness of less than an inch, which is comparatively uncommon for low-cost gaming laptops, really impresses me. However, as we’ll discover later, it does cause some thermal throttling.
Now, let’s go to Acer’s first option for the Nitro 7: The screen. It’s a feature that most low-cost laptops omit. Sure, it’s nice to have, but it’s a luxury. When faced with a decision, the majority of manufacturers choose to invest their little funds in internal hardware.
However, the 15.6-inch, 1920×1080 IPS screen of the Nitro 7 has really nice visuals. Yes, this display is still very much entry-level. However, the Nitro 7 effortlessly clears the 250-nit threshold we use for battery testing, viewing angles are pretty wide, and color reproduction is surprisingly good. With its infamously poor display, the Nitro 7 has some distinct benefits over the Predator Helios 300.
The keyboard on the Nitro 7 is likewise impressive. It is a standard chiclet slab in most respects, yet it is enjoyable to type on since each keystroke has a good amount of travel and a satisfying clack. Although this is a gaming laptop, I’ve been using it for work and have produced many long articles with it this month.
If nothing else, the touchpad’s lack of real mouse buttons excites me less. That is irritating to me on any laptop used for gaming. In theory, you should always plug in a mouse when playing video games, but in practice, that’s not always practical, and in those cases, tap-to-click touchpads are nearly hard to use effectively. However, it’s sensitive and smooth, which makes it better than some of the inexpensive ones I’ve tried.
The ports are very normal; however, venting on the right face causes the power input to be pushed about halfway down the side, which is an unusual but not unheard-of decision. A 3.5mm audio input and a single USB 2.0 port connect to it, and the left side houses an Ethernet connector, two USB-A 3.1 connections, a USB-C port, and an HDMI port. For a model that is entry-level, that is a really large variety.
What about the presenters? It’s best to let them go. Although the built-in audio on the Nitro 7 is only intended for light web surfing and other similar uses, I would say the same thing about the majority of high-end laptops. You should definitely grab your headphones for anything more serious than a YouTube video because it’s loud yet extremely tinny.
Acer Nitro 7 Summary
We truly like that the Acer Nitro 7 doesn’t have a gaudy design. The monolithic construction has a sleek appearance, and the black paint job resists smudges well. With a refresh rate of 144 Hz, the 15.6-inch IPS display has a full HD resolution of 1920×1080. For indoor use, we found the brightness to be more than sufficient.
The chiclet-style keyboard’s keys are responsive to typing since they are well-spaced and have adequate travel. There are four brightness settings for the red illumination on the keys. You will need to remove the complete base of the Nitro 7, which is secured in place by Philips screws because it does not provide convenient access to the RAM and storage.
The specifications of our review model include an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU with 6GB of GDDR6 RAM, an Intel Core i7-9750H CPU, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, and 1TB of SSD storage (2x 512GB NVMe SSDs in RAID 0). Acer’s CoolBoost technology, which is said to raise fan speed by 10% when compared to Auto mode, is another feature of the laptop. Acer’s Nitro Sense application may even be launched with a dedicated button located in the Number pad region.
Apps loaded rapidly on Windows 10, and the 144Hz refresh rate gave everything a fast, fluid feel. The brightness and color reproduction of the display screen was well more than sufficient for indoor use. When we weren’t undertaking any intense activity, the Nitro 7 also operated quietly and didn’t overheat. We also experienced a really pleasant gaming experience with the top-end specifications that we evaluated.
Although Acer advertises a 7-hour battery life, we were only able to get approximately 4-5 hours of continuous use out of a single charge, which is not bad but might have been better.
