Dyson is a British firm that specializes in vacuum cleaners, air purifiers, fans, and hand and hair dryers. They have a large assortment of stick and portable vacuums, but they have also produced canister vacuums and more traditional uprights. Regardless of design, they all use Dyson’s trademark cyclone technology, which eliminates the need for a dirtbag.

Dyson V15s Detect Submarine – The wet and dry vacuum
The V15s Detect is simply the V15 Detect vacuum with an extra wet floor cleaning head, the Submarine, that may be used to mop, although it cannot steam or sterilize floors. Keep in mind that the motorized elements of the two vacuum cleaner types are not interchangeable: if you already own a V15 Detect, you cannot purchase the Submarine head for it.
The V15s Detect includes the Submarine Wet Roller, the Digital Motorbar for carpets, the Fluffy Optic cleaner head for hard floors, the Hair Screw tool, a crevice tool, a combination tool, a clear wand clip, a drip tray, a charger, and a docking station. It’s the complete cleaning kit, featuring tools for every floor type and circumstance.
We found the Submarine head to be a really efficient mop substitute. It may be used with both simple water and detergent. However, it is best used on a regular basis because it will not remove embedded filth. It’s also self-propelling, which is a bonus considering the vacuum’s weight of 8.3lbs/3.75kg (plus a little more when the water tank is full) and the fact that the trigger is back – you’ll need to keep it down when using the vacuum.
It’s an expensive prospect, but if you need a vacuum for carpets, hard floors, and mopping, this is the greatest all-in-one alternative available right now.
Dyson Gen5 detect – The new flagship
It’s quite strong, with 262AW of suction compared to the V15’s 230, and can quickly sweep up adjacent dust and debris.
It incorporates all of the technologies from the V15 Detect, including the green laser and piezo sensor, and then some. One of its nicest new features is the crevice tool incorporated into the top of the wand, which allows for fast handheld cleaning. But you’ll also get an armful of other fantastic accessories, such as the hair screw tool and the jointed low-reach adaptor, which allows the Gen5 to lie flat to fit beneath couches without the need for a connection.
Our only complaint (beyond the price) is its weight. The Gen5detect weighs 3.5kg (7.7lbs) thanks to the new battery that drives the improved motor. It is Dyson’s heaviest cordless yet – and it feels it.
Dyson V15 Detect
The Dyson V15 Detect is the greatest Dyson vacuum we have tested. The main feature of this cordless stick/handheld vacuum is the built-in dirt sensor, which counts and measures the size of particles sucked into the vacuum. This information may be found on the LED display at the rear of its body. This isn’t a must-have tool, but it might be quite useful if you have allergies and want a ballpark estimate of allergen levels in your house. Its second key feature is a surface recognition technology that automatically raises power on carpeted areas and reduces it when it returns to hard flooring.
The vacuum’s 230AW suction motor is unusually strong for a cordless model, allowing for excellent dirt collection on a variety of surfaces, similar to some corded versions. While it has a few modest quality-of-life improvements, such as an integrated combination tool and a stronger laser light for its soft-roller floorhead, these are insufficient to explain the significant price premium over the V15. Of course, if you’re ready to spend even more, there’s the Dyson Gen5outsize, which varies from the basic Gen5detect by having a larger dustbin and a broader cleaning head.
Dyson V12 Detect Slim
The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is closer to a perfect stick vacuum than any other model we’ve examined. It’s lightweight and agile around furniture and stairs, and it also works on shelves, walls, and ceilings.
The V12 Detect Slim competes with more costly vacuums (like the Dyson V15) in suction, airflow, and cleaning power, and it includes a variety of brushes and attachments, including a motorized brush for pet hair. It can operate for 45 minutes on a single charge, which is longer than most other vacuums we’ve tried.
It boasts high-tech features that make it almost enjoyable to use, such as a sensor that automatically adjusts suction, a laser lamp that illuminates dust in dark corners, and an LCD screen that displays battery life and other information. It’s also among the quietest ones we’ve tried.
The V12 Detect Slim’s main drawback is its small, 12-ounce dustbin, which needs to be emptied frequently. You must also switch between two different brushes depending on whether you are cleaning carpet or bare floors.
It takes four hours to charge, which is longer than most other models, and it cannot stand on its own. Dyson offers a two-year warranty.
Dyson V12 Detect Slim
The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is the most agile and powerful cordless stick vacuum we’ve tested.
It’s slim and elegant. The V12 Detect Slim, weighing just over 5 pounds, can comfortably navigate tight places and stairs. We found the V12 Detect Slim to be comfortable for our hands and wrists, despite the fact that the majority of its weight is on the top. Its cleaner head swivels 180 degrees, allowing it to go into tight corners, behind table legs, and between furniture more effectively than other vacuums we tested. It’s also more quieter (73 dB) than other variants. Previous Dyson models had an unpleasant trigger-style switch that had to be squeezed to operate, but the V12 Detect Slim has an on/off button.
It sucks (in a positive manner). The V12 Detect Slim has high suction and airflow, and it excels at collecting dust and debris from both bare floors and rugs. In our controlled rug-cleaning test, it consumed nearly all of the baking soda we had put out on medium-pile rugs, indicating that it is capable of targeting deeper-sitting dust and dander that other cordless sticks may overlook. (One rival picked up slightly more than 40%.) It was also effective in extracting fur from carpets.
The V12 Detect Slim features three suction modes: eco (lower suction to preserve power), boost (higher suction), and auto. The auto mode is very useful since the dust sensor detects dirt and activates additional suction power as needed; for example, in our tests, the V12 Detect Slim frequently went into boost mode near a cat litter box.
V11 Absolute – Light to use and well-priced
The V11 Absolute remains a strong cordless cleaner. It offers tremendous suction and several useful functions. Its LCD panel indicates how long you can vacuum with your current settings and how much battery life is left, as well as diagnostic graphics if something goes wrong.
The V11 has a maximum battery life of 60 minutes, which the screen should help you get the most of. The battery takes 4.5 hours to charge, however later V11 versions include a swappable battery, allowing you to double your cleaning duration.

If you vacuum frequently yet prefer the convenience of a cordless vacuum, this is the vacuum for you. One of its most useful features is the extra-large trashcan (1.7 liters), which eliminates the need to constantly pause to empty.
Don’t purchase it for your grandmother, though.
The V11 Outsize is becoming tougher to obtain. In the United States, you can already obtain the Gen5 outsize, which has all of the same functionality as the Gen5 but is much larger. This model is not yet available in the UK.
